Description

Performs difficult skilled technical work managing the shop facility, safeguarding and managing the inventory of parts and equipment, perform fleet management and fleet software maintenance; orchestrate auction of vehicles and equipment, troubleshoot, maintains, repair and rebuild vehicles and equipment; welding and fabricating; and other functions as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Solid Waste Superintendent of Operations.

Examples of Duties


  1. Manages the shop facility; oversees the equipment and parts inventory; prioritizes vehicle and equipment repairs.
  2. Performs fleet maintenance; preventative maintenance; performs cost/benefit analysis when work has to be contracted.
  3. Prepares, reviews, and approves work orders and prioritizes pre-checks requiring work being performed on the rolling stock and equipment.
  4. Recovers and repairs vehicles and other site equipment needing repair, maintenance, welding, and fabrication.
  5. Responsible for listing and managing public auctions for equipment and vehicles.
  6. Keeps abreast of training on safety procedures and assures timely repair of vehicles and equipment.
  7. Performs cost/benefit on new vehicles and equipment.
  8. Assists in landfill and material recovery facility operations, as needed.
  9. Performs public relations, as needed.

Essential Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in fleet and inventory management, equipment repair and maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associates/Technical degree preferred. Obtain Department of Natural Resources Landfill Operators certification in the State of Wisconsin within six (6) months of hire. Obtain Environmental Protection Agency 608 and 609 refrigerant and refrigerant recovery certification within one (1) year of hire. Possession of Class A, B, and C Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake and "N" Tanker Endorsement preferred. Valid driver's license in the State of Wisconsin.

Thorough knowledge of County and department policies and procedures to include emergency and inclement weather policies; ability to prioritize and manage multiple, concurrent projects; attention to detail and ability to effectively organize time and anticipate, plan and successfully respond to changing circumstances; ability to manage the shop and oversee the inventory; thorough knowledge of fleet maintenance; ability to analyze truck repairs and associated costs; working knowledge of various computer programs including but not limited to Excel, Word, Gmail, and Internet Explorer; ability to comprehend and interpret a variety of documents including time sheets, bids, billing invoices, financial and other reports, material safety data sheets, accident reports, parts and service manuals, policy manuals; ability to prepare and review a variety of documents, bid specifications, ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to operate and use standard office equipment; knowledge and ability to use standard office and position specific software; ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other departments and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires lifting and repetitive motions, frequently requires walking, speaking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling and occasionally requires standing, sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

The County provides a retirement account in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) for eligible employees. Employees pay one-half of the required contribution; the County pays the other half.
