The Director of Development is a key executive role reporting jointly through the Managing Director and Chief Philanthropy Officer ( CPO ) or designee, working closely with the Artistic Director and the Board. The Director of Development is pivotal in establishing and deepening relationships with institutional and individual donors at all levels, engaging in cultivation and stewardship, and providing guidance and support to the development team for grants and sponsorships as well as special events. Salary $80,000 – $102,000 Salary commensurate with experience . About Pioneer Theatre Company PTC is Utah’s premier professional theatre company, operating under a LORT B agreement with the Actor’s Equity Association and contracting with other creative unions as well. In residence at The University of Utah since its origin in 1962, PTC produces a season of seven plays and musicals in the 932-seat Simmons Pioneer Memorial Theatre and the new 287-seat Meldrum Theatre, which opened in May 2024. In recent years PTC has added a concert musical and a new play development series to its regular September to May production calendar. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Karen Azenberg and Interim Managing Director Diane L. Parisi, the theatre operates with a current annual budget of $5 million. The theatre maintains a full-time and seasonal full-time staff of 34 and employs between 130 and 150 theatre professionals, backstage crew, and front-of-house staff each season. Responsibilities Work in tandem with the Managing Director to develop short- and long-term fundraising goals for the Theatre. Develops case- and project-statements that may be used in grant proposals and solicitations. Create and implement a comprehensive plan to grow PTC’s donor base and increase philanthropic revenue and grants over time to meet artistic and institutional goals. This role predominantly focusses efforts on the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift donors and prospects. The position actively builds and manages a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors through focused and intentional engagement to maximize support for PTC . Strategically expand corporate partnerships/sponsorships, developing funding opportunities and building relationships with marketing and philanthropic divisions of companies and businesses. Work with University Advancement to coordinate donor strategies and expand the donor pool with prospect development and research. Supervise, mentor, and work in partnership with a development team of two, including establishing fundraising benchmarks and tracking progress. Serves as primary liaison to the Board, the Development Chair, Managing Director, and the Artistic Director for all fundraising activities. Work closely with all PTC departments, including Artistic, Production, Company Management, Marketing and Patron Services on efforts to pursue philanthropic support for PTC . Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Business, Communication, Public Relations, English, or a related field, or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Five years experience in fundraising, marketing, sales, business, public relations, annual, corporate or foundation giving which includes two years of budgeting and supervisory experience. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Experience in grant or proposal writing, public speaking, a background working with print and/or electronic media, an understanding of university fundraising practices and personnel management is preferred.
